Is it right to eat a pig that wants to be eaten?
Thought experiments are short scenarios of that pose a moral or philosophical problem in a vivid and concrete way. In this book Julian Baggini presents 100 of the most intriguing thought experiments from they history of philosophy and ideas.
they are not so much logical puzzles as invitations to think hard about challenging questions. Accordingly, Baggini doesn’t serve up right or worng answers to the reader, but instead explores ways of teasing out the issues they raise.
From Zeno’s paradox to Nietzsche’s theory of eternal recurrence, via the poppadom paradox and Plato’s cave, Baggini asks if it is right to punish people for what they haven’t yet done, how can we tell whether we are awake or dreaming, and whether virtual sex counts as infidelity. Drawing oncolourful examples form films such as An American Werewolf in London and Minority Report, as well as television, literature and philosophical classics, this book makes philosophy not only mind-stretching but also entertaining.
